  • Date: Sep 13, 2025
  • Role: Music Director / Composer / Guitarist
  • Artist: 천하제일탈공작소 (Greatest Mask) / 소리를 보는 사람들(Sobosa)

The Visceral Dialogue: Dismantling the Confines of Tradition

Mooniverse is a vibrant street-art intervention that reimagines the boundaries of Korean Talchum (Mask Dance) through the lens of Western Gypsy Jazz. Anchored by the infectious swing of Manouche jazz, the project constructs a living acoustic tapestry that breathes in perfect sync with the dancers' dynamic physical narratives.

Organic Resonance: The Architecture of Pure Sound

By deliberately eschewing electronic intervention, Mooniverse focuses on the raw, tactile pulse of acoustic instruments. This approach establishes an immediate, unmediated connection between the performers and the public, transforming the urban streetscape into an intimate arena of shared energy.

  • Rhythmic Alchemy (La Pompe & Jangdan): A sophisticated cross-pollination of the iconic ‘La Pompe’ guitar pulse with the visceral strikes of traditional Korean percussion, birthing a singular, transcultural groove.

  • Acoustic Street Narrative: A strategic arrangement designed to radiate high-intensity energy without mechanical amplification, reclaiming the open-air realm as a sanctuary for narrative depth.

  • The Convergence of Legacies: A seamless dialogue between Western acoustic traditions and Korean folk performance, delivering an experience that is at once universally accessible and intellectually profound.

An Epistemological Inquiry: How Does Music Exist for the Deaf?

A collaborative multidisciplinary project with Sobosa (People Who See Sound), an arts collective comprising both Deaf and hearing artists. On a stage where spoken words, sign language, and physical movement intersect, this performance poses a fundamental question: In what form does music exist for those who cannot hear? The answer is meticulously crafted through a serene, contemplative acoustic ensemble that prioritizes presence over volume.

The Architecture of Empathy: Visualizing Sound and Sculpting Space

Moving away from the conventional reliance on heavy vibrations or physical impact, this project transmutes the very act of generating sound into a visual and spatial vocabulary. By utilizing an acoustic palette—contrabass, guitar, piano, janggu, and daegeum—the performance elevates the mechanics of music into a shared sensory experience.

  • The Choreography of Sound (Visualizing the Auditory): The delicate movement of a performer’s fingertips, the visceral vibration of a string, and the visible breath required for a wind instrument are reclaimed as visual rhythms. These "physical utterances" provide Deaf audiences with an intuitive, lyrical flow of the musical narrative.

  • The Poetics of Breath and Void (A Shared Atmospheric Flow): The warmth of the guitar and piano, grounded by the deep resonance of the contrabass, harmonizes with the aesthetic of the "void" introduced by the daegeum and janggu. This carefully tuned atmosphere fosters a shared sanctuary of peace for both the hearing and the Deaf.

  • The Invisible Skeleton (Synchronizing Breath and Motion): As sign language and spoken words evolve into dance, the live acoustic score functions as an unseen framework. It serves as the vital medium that flawlessly synchronizes the performers’ visual timing and collective breath.

Electro-House Transformation of Traditional Rhythms and Large-scale Outdoor Fusion

A large-scale outdoor project produced for the Seoul Street Arts Festival (SSAF), bringing together the mask dance group Greatest Mask and the aerial performance group Project Nalda. Traditional Korean percussion rhythms—including Byeoldalgeori, Taryeong, and Gilgunak—were deconstructed and reassembled into the modern Electro-House genre, transforming the plaza into a massive festival venue and an outdoor club.

Overwhelming Dance Groove from a 5-piece Live Band

Featuring a 5-piece lineup of drums, bass, keyboard, guitar, and taepyeongso, the project realized the heavy impact of electronic dance music through 100% live performance without relying on mechanical loops.

  • Live Electro-House: Replaced the dynamic rhythms of Byeoldalgeori and Gilgunak with heavy house beats from drums and bass, layered with funky guitar cutting and keyboard synthesizers for an intuitive and danceable sound.

  • Taepyeongso Lead: Assigned the role of the main lead synthesizer to the Taepyeongso, creating a shamanic and powerful melody line that pierces through the vast spatiality of the outdoor plaza.

  • Unifying the Plaza: Coordinated explosive festival energy in real-time, allowing large-scale performers moving between the ground and air, along with the audience, to dance together in a single breath of ‘Ninano.’

Stand-up Performance Combining the Three Elements of Mask Dance and a Live Band

Premiered at the National Busan Gugak Center’s Yeongnam Dance Festival, this work features mask dancer Insun Park—an initiate of Gangnyeong Talchum—deconstructing and reassembling the core elements of mask dance: Jaedam (dialogue), song, and dance, through a modern lens. As the music director and live guitarist, I designed a powerful and organic live band sound that blends Western and traditional instruments to accompany this one-person stand-up comedy-style performance.

Dynamic Ensemble Amplifying Rhythms and Movements

A four-piece male ensemble consisting of guitar, bass (Hahyeongki Baek), drums (Hyunmo Yang), and piri/taepyeongso (Johyun Kim) responds instantly to the dancer’s breath and actions. Functioning as active narrative subjects, the band moves beyond simple accompaniment to drive the tension of the performance.

  • Live Interactive Grooves: A band production that maximizes the dynamic movements of the mask dancer by layering the sharp melodies of the piri and taepyeongso over Western grooves created by the electric guitar and rhythm section.

  • Musical Translation of Jaedam: A modern performance space that invites audience immersion by meticulously translating the unique intonation and comedic tempo of the dialogue (Jaedam) into guitar riffs and percussion impacts.

  • Stand-up Comedy & Rock: A live set that combines a "rock spirit" to match the scale of the solo performance, characterized by bold emotional arcs, fostering intense communication with contemporary audiences.

Contemporary Imagination of Mask Dance and Electronic Rock Fusion Sound

A contemporary mask dance project by Greatest Mask, sparked by the provocative question: "What would mask dance look like if it had evolved alongside the times?" In this production, which has continued to evolve across numerous stages following its finale at the Namsan Gukak Center, I served as the music director, completely reimagining the original rhythms of regional mask dances into hybrid tracks that blend modern electronic and rock sounds.

Sensory Production and Guitar Textures Enhancing Character Narratives

Reflecting the modernized reincarnations of seven mask dance characters—such as Imae, reimagined as a rapper, and Chwibari, transformed into a street dancer—I established sophisticated stage music by interlacing dynamic guitar performances with mechanical electronic beats.

  • Deconstruction and Fusion of Genres: Created a contemporary groove by deconstructing traditional mask dance rhythms, previously viewed as static heritage, and reassembling them with the impact of rock and danceable electronic synthesizer sources.

  • Character-Specific Theme Composition: Produced three-dimensional themes utilizing distinct electronic sound sources and electric guitar tones for each track, tailored to the unique personalities and narratives of the modernized characters.

  • Modern Stage Music Design: Moving beyond the standard live band format, the meticulously programmed electronic rock sound was designed to provide the audience with an intuitive sense of "Shinmyeong" (traditional excitement), as if they were in a modern club or concert hall.

Lee Areum's Jeongga ‘Si-si’

  • Role: Music Director / Composer / Guitarist

Dreamy Ambient Sound Where Flowing Time (時) and Poetry (詩) Become Song

A project collaborated with Lee Areum, an initiate of Gagok (National Intangible Cultural Heritage). This performance interprets the essence of Jeongga—singing about flowing time and the poetry that dwells within it—through modern electronic ambient sounds. By actively utilizing synthesizer and electric guitar tone-making over the refined vocalization characteristic of Jeongga, a meditative soundscape was established through layers of sound.

Intimate Layers of Sound Created by Voice and Guitar

Reinterpreting the elegant melody of Jeongga through electronic music grammar, this project moves beyond simple accompaniment to complete a three-dimensional acoustic journey where voice and instrument resonate organically.

  • Ambient Jeongga Crossover: Established a dreamy sound environment where tradition and modernity coexist by layering electric guitar and electronic music over the refined melodies of Jeongga through real-time effecting.

  • Guitar-centric Sound Texture: As a guitarist, I transformed and looped instrument sounds in real-time to serve as the source of ambient sound, providing an immersive acoustic experience that warmly envelops poetic language.

  • Meditative and Deep Afterglow: Focused on the quiet and peaceful flow created by the breath of voice and guitar instead of stimulating beats, delivering deep contemplation and emotional resonance to the audience.

Sensory Soundtrack for the Fusion of Traditional Performance and Modern Entertainment Formats

A flagship project of the artist group 'Paldo Bobusang,' formed by mask dancer Insun Park, Gyeonggi-sori singer Seongryong Yeo, and musician Donghyuk Heo. Based on a fictional TV show concept where itinerant merchants (Bobusang) from eight provinces gather to compete, the project premiered at Mullae Art Space, presenting a popular yet experimental stage by integrating the primal vitality of traditional performance (Yeonhui) with the sophisticated sound grammar of modern broadcasting.

Variations of Diverse Genres Driving the Show's Narrative

Moving beyond a simple background role, the project secured both entertainment value and artistic completion through sophisticated composition and arrangement that regulated tension and release at every stage of the show.

  • Release Date: Nov 19, 2021 2021. 11. 19

Structural Crossover of Traditional Performance and Electronic Music

The primary work of 'Paldo Bobusang,' a multidisciplinary project combining traditional performances by Gyeonggi-sori singer Seongryong Yeo and mask dancer Insun Park with electronic music. This project experiments with the contemporary expansion of traditional arts by replacing traditional Jaedam (narrative) with modern rap rhythms and placing them over an electronic soundscape.

Deconstruction of Genre Grammar and Sound Relocation

Moving beyond the simple physical mixing of Korean traditional and Western music, this production presents a sound design that functionally relocates the unique textures of each genre.

  • Acid House Beat: An electronic rhythm design based on Acid House that breaks the static flow of traditional music and leads the overall groove of the tracks.

  • Guitar Riff & Synthesizer: Provides a modern pop texture by interlacing repetitive, addictive guitar riffs with layered synthesizer tracks.

  • Vocal as a Rhythm Source: Ensures a three-dimensional depth by treating the Gyeonggi-minyo-style melodies and humorous Jaedam as more than just a melody, but as a percussive rhythm source through the diction itself.
